Development Story>

Known for his success in the 4A division, Fery has long captivated the European yo-yo scene with his unique and elegant style.
In recent years, he has incorporated that same artistry into 1A, showcasing his presence on a new stage.

In November 2024, inspired by Fery’s one-of-a-kind flow and his unmistakably unique 1A style,
mowl® producer Eiji Okuyama proposed the idea of creating a 1A signature model during Fery’s visit to Japan.
And thus, the development of “Short King” began.

About the Design Concept>

In the early stages of development, Fery’s requests for the design were as follows:

  1. The yo-yo should share the same shape as the Shawty.

  2. The diameter should be within 56mm, and the width should be under 49mm.

  3. The ideal material would be POM.

  4. The wing section of the Shawty should be retained.

  5. The rim should feature a rounded inner rim shaped like an “X.”

Among these five points, the one Fery emphasized the most was that the yo-yo must have the same shape as the Shawty.

While this served as an essential factor in the design process,
it also became one of the most challenging aspects in determining the overall weight balance.

 <About the Shape Design>

Reflecting Fery’s requests to the greatest extent possible, we began by fine-tuning the form and establishing the basic outline.

Although Fery’s main request was to maintain the same shape as the Shawty, in reality, achieving that was not as simple as scaling down the body.
Since both the Shawty and Short King use the same C-size bearing, reducing the body size directly would not preserve the same proportions.
Our goal was to achieve a silhouette that appears identical to the Shawty when viewed from the outside, and we continued adjusting the design until Fery was fully satisfied.

While the body and hub were designed with sharp precision, we intentionally paired them with rounded stainless steel inner rims.
This seemingly contrasting combination of sharp and soft elements creates a unique harmony, resulting in a distinctive form for a 1A yo-yo.

 <Designed for Feel>

As rim balance adjustments became necessary, we began reconsidering how to define the overall play feel and took a closer look at Fery’s 1A performance.

Through detailed analysis, we found that Fery’s 1A control closely mirrors his 4A style — as if his offstring flow had been seamlessly translated into a 1A format.

Initially, the concept was to create a 1A yo-yo that simply looked like a 4A model in its form.
However, our design team at mowl proposed a new idea:
“If the yo-yo’s play feel itself also reflects a 4A character, it might better capture Fery’s true essence.”

With that direction in mind, the design process evolved toward realizing this concept in its purest form.

Rim Weight Balance and Design Details>

With the form and play feel finalized, the next step was to translate the concept into an actual design — and that’s where several challenges began to emerge.

Because the form had already been defined first, the placement of the rims was extremely limited. Within those constraints, we needed to identify positions that would maximize both material strength and rim weight.

In the first prototype, we managed to secure a functional rim layout and balance.
However, the factory pointed out that, due to the rim placement, there was a potential risk of instability and vibration during production.
As a result, we decided to revisit and refine the entire configuration — from rim positioning to overall balance — once again.

Compared to the first prototype, the wings were slightly shortened, while the visible portion of the rims was made as round as possible.
At the same time, the overall width was expanded to increase the rim’s contact area, ensuring both machining stability and consistent yo-yo posture during play.

Through repeated fine adjustments to these details, the final production model was completed.

About the Play Feel>

The natural softness of the POM material and the sharp feeling derived from the shape come together in perfect harmony, creating a completely new play sensation.

The ultra-thinly molded POM body provides a stress-free and unparalleled level of control.

While the yo-yo features a relatively wide 48mm profile, the stainless steel rims are positioned closer to the center, allowing the width to expand without sacrificing maneuverability or balance.

Similar to an offstring model, its wide profile significantly improves string hit accuracy, making it exceptionally capable for dynamic horizontal tricks and fast-paced combo sequences.

Designer’s Comment>

Take a close look—and feel for yourself—the wide catch-zone form, the rims that appear round from every angle, and the subtle detailing around the rim joints.

By trying to replicate Fery’s unique movements or experimenting with offstring-inspired tricks using the Short King,
you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the model’s distinct character and playability.

<Short King 制作の背景>

The story of my new signature yo-yo, Short King, began in November 2024, during my three-month stay in Osaka.

One evening, Eiji casually asked me,
“Would you like to have your own 1A signature yo-yo?”

At first, I declined. I felt that I hadn’t yet achieved enough to deserve such an honor.
But a week later, Eiji asked me again —
“So, how would you feel about having your own 1A signature model?”

That’s when I decided to stop being overly modest.
Opportunities like this don’t come around often, and I knew I’d regret it if I turned it down.

The concept behind Short King was simple.
It was based on my 4A signature model Shawty, released in April of this year, redesigned as a smaller, 1A-oriented version.

After discussing with the mowl design team, we decided to add a metal rim to secure the right amount of weight, setting the total at 66.1g.

The first prototype arrived on December 23 of last year.
It had a fun and lively feel, but one thing was clearly missing — stability.
To fix this, we widened the rims and made small adjustments to the center hub design.

When the second prototype arrived in May this year, all of the previous issues had been resolved.
It had exactly the feeling I had hoped for, and I couldn’t have been happier with the result!

How the Name “Short King” Came to Be>

I wanted to pick something that my generation could relate to — just a casual choice from Gen Z slang.

Honestly, I was torn between “Short King” and “Rizzler,” but in the end, Short King won out (laughs).

Short King is a positive term that celebrates men who embrace self-confidence,
while Rizzler comes from the word “charisma,” referring to someone who’s effortlessly charming or attractive.

<About Short King>

For me, Short King is simply an incredibly fun yo-yo.
I’ve spent most of this year playing with it, and it’s been such a joy every time.

For a plastic 1A yo-yo, its shape is quite unique—sharp, even—and that gives it a strange yet fascinating feeling that I really enjoy.

At first, Eiji and I had different opinions about the material, but we ultimately decided to go with POM instead of polycarbonate.
That choice allowed us to preserve as much of the original vibe as possible, and personally, I think that makes it even more special.

In short, Short King is a fun and intriguing yo-yo—perfect for anyone who’s looking for a play experience that feels truly different.
