＜Development Story＞

Fery has made his mark across the European yo-yo scene

as an offstring player and two-time EYYC 4A Division Champion.

In recent years, he has brought his distinctive and beautiful 4A-inspired play style into 1A,

establishing a strong presence on the 1A stage as well.

In November 2024, deeply impressed by Fery's distinctive flow

and his uniquely expressive approach to 1A,

mowl® producer Okuyama

approached Fery about creating a signature 1A model while he was visiting Japan.

That conversation marked the beginning of the project.

＜Design Concept＞

At the beginning of development, Fery gave us five key requests:

① A 1A yo-yo with the same overall form as Shawty

② A diameter of 56 mm or less and an overall width below 49 mm

③ POM as the ideal body material

④ Preserve Shawty's distinctive wing section

⑤ Use rounded inner rims similar to those found on “X”

Of these five requests, the one Fery emphasized most strongly was

“It has to retain the same shape as Shawty.”

This became one of the most important principles behind the design,

but at the same time, one of the most challenging constraints when determining the balance.

 ＜Defining the Form＞

We established the basic outline while making subtle adjustments

to reflect Fery's requests as closely as possible.

Although his request was for the same shape,

Shawty and Short King both use the same C-size bearing,

so simply scaling the body down would not reproduce the same proportions.

Instead, we focused on creating a balance that would make the silhouette appear faithful to Shawty,

refining it repeatedly until Fery was satisfied.

The sharply designed body and hub

are intentionally paired with rounded stainless steel inner rims.

These seemingly opposing elements create an unexpected harmony,

resulting in a highly distinctive form for a 1A yo-yo.

 ＜Defining the Play Feel＞

Because the rim balance also required careful adjustment,

we revisited Fery's 1A play while considering what kind of feel this model should have.

What became clear was that Fery controls a 1A yo-yo

almost as if he were translating his 4A style directly into 1A.

At first, we thought it would simply be interesting

to create a 1A yo-yo whose form looked almost like a 4A yo-yo.

But our designer began to ask, “What if even the play feel itself

had a distinctly 4A-like character?”

We felt this would express Fery's individuality even more clearly,

and developed the design around that conclusion.

＜Rim Balance & Details＞

Once the form and intended play feel had been established,

we moved into the actual engineering stage.

That was when several difficult challenges emerged.

Because the external form had already been prioritized,

the available space for rim placement was extremely limited.

Within those constraints, we had to find a position that could maximize both structural strength and rim weight.

The first prototype allowed us to establish a workable rim position and balance.

However, the factory pointed out that the configuration could make the yo-yo more prone to vibration

and potentially difficult to manufacture consistently as a production model.

We therefore reconsidered the entire rim placement and balance once again.

Compared with the first prototype, the production version features a shorter wing section.

The visible portion of the rim was kept as rounded as possible while increasing its width and contact area,

improving both manufacturing stability and the yo-yo's ability to maintain its orientation during play.

After repeated fine adjustments to these details, the production version was complete.

＜Play Feel＞

The softness inherent to POM

combines perfectly with the sharp character created by the shape,

producing an entirely new play feel.

The POM body has been machined as thin as possible,

creating a uniquely effortless and stress-free sense of control.

 
Although the body is relatively wide at 48 mm,

the stainless steel rims are positioned closer to the center,

allowing us to increase the width without sacrificing maneuverability.

Like an offstring yo-yo, its generous width

dramatically increases the margin for successful string hits.

It is particularly well suited to dynamic horizontal tricks

and fast combinations.

＜A Comment from the Designer＞

We hope you'll take the time to see and feel the details for yourself:

the wide catch-zone profile, the rims that appear rounded from almost every angle,

and the subtle detailing around the rim joints.

 Try using Short King to imitate the way Fery moves a yo-yo,

or experiment with tricks inspired by 4A.

We think that is where the unique personality of Short King becomes even more apparent.

＜A Message from Fery＞

＜The Story Behind Short King＞

The story of my new signature yo-yo model, “Short King,”

began in November 2024, while I was staying in Osaka for three months.

One evening, Eiji suddenly asked me, “Would you like to have your own signature 1A yo-yo?”

At first, I declined because I felt that I hadn't achieved enough yet

to deserve an honor like that.

But a week later, Eiji asked me again,

“So, how would you feel about having your own 1A signature?”

That was when I decided to stop being overly humble.

An opportunity like this doesn't come around very often, and I knew I would regret it if I said no.

The concept behind Short King was very simple.

We would take my 4A signature model “Shawty,” released in April,

shrink it down, and rebuild it as a 1A yo-yo.

After talking with the mowl designer,

we decided to add metal rims to secure enough weight

and bring the total weight to 66.1 g.

The first prototype arrived on December 23.

It already had a really fun feel,

but it was clearly missing one thing: stability.

So we widened the rims and slightly redesigned the center hub.

When the second prototype arrived in May,

all of the previous issues had been solved,

and I was really happy because it finally felt exactly the way I had imagined!

＜About the Name “Short King”＞

I wanted to pick something almost randomly from Gen Z slang

that people around my age would relate to.

Honestly, it came down to “Short King” or “Rizzler,”

but in the end, “Short King” won. (lol)

※Short King: A positive expression used to celebrate a shorter man who carries himself with confidence.

※Rizzler: Slang derived from “rizz,” itself shortened from “charisma,” referring to someone who is especially charming or attractive.

＜About Short King＞

To me, Short King is simply an incredibly fun yo-yo.

I've spent most of this year playing with it.

For a plastic 1A yo-yo, the shape is extremely unusual and sharp,

which gives it this combination of feeling both strange and fun at the same time.

Eiji and I originally had different opinions about the material,

but in the end, we chose POM instead of polycarbonate.

That allowed us to recreate as much of the original character as possible,

and personally, I think that makes it even more special.

To sum it up, Short King is an incredibly fun and interesting yo-yo,

and it's perfect for anyone looking for a play experience that feels genuinely different from what they're used to.
