mowl®’s First Hollow Yo-Yo, Casual to Carry
"Capsuloid"
Blending art, design, and philosophy, mowl® presents its first hollow yo-yo, Capsuloid,
and to celebrate the 1st anniversary of mowl Osaka,
a special edition—the Chamber Edition—has arrived.
"Capsuloid" Chamber Edition / Nebular Dose
The word “Chamber” refers to a “special space with a distinct purpose,” highlighting the hidden, intricate interior of this hollow yo-yo.
The inner structure of Capsuloid, designed as a “secret capsule from space,” features six molecular structures floating in a distorted space-time, alongside a mesmerizing cosmic landscape.
Each individual yo-yo takes over 150 minutes of precise, meticulous engraving to complete, making it a true culmination of art, hollow design, and mowl®’s craftsmanship.
The colorway, Nebular Dose, combines soft grays and silvers reminiscent of a shimmering nebula.
Laser engraving subtly reflects light depending on the angle, evoking the sensation of drifting through the deep cosmos as the nebula seems to shift and transform.
This limited edition merges delicacy with mystique, resulting in a truly captivating piece.
<Development Background>
The idea of a hollow yo-yo had been discussed since around 2020,
but innovative concepts had yet to fully materialize,
delaying mowl®’s first hollow release.
In 2023, during a design meeting, KALON DESIGN STUDIO,
responsible for the Capsuloid graphics, proposed:
“We want to create a yo-yo led by artwork first.”
Typically, yo-yo graphic design begins after the prototype is complete,
which often limits artistic freedom.
This proposal reversed the process: design a functional yo-yo that matches the artwork,
enabling the graphic designer to express freely on the yo-yo’s surface—a bold and unique approach.

<Designer's Interview>
Here, mowl®’s design team and the graphic designer introduce Capsuloid and share insights on its development and concept.
- Design Philosophy-

With an artwork-first approach, the project began with the concept of a yo-yo that you could “always carry with you.”
From the perspective of mowl®’s design philosophy—pursuing innovation—it was decided to create a hollow model larger than typical market sizes, providing a broad face to highlight the artwork.
Hollow yo-yos naturally have weight concentrated in the caps, so the challenge was to maintain a balanced feel:
• keeping the caps intact
• adding weight to the outer rim
• creating a throw that feels substantial like a standard metal yo-yo
The goal was a hollow yo-yo that remained casual and approachable, not strictly competition-focused, while maintaining responsiveness and a smooth, enjoyable play experience.
Thanks to its rounded shape, the yo-yo provides a gentle, comfortable feel throughout play, and its light, smooth throws make it easy to handle despite its larger diameter.
The design ensures long play sessions are enjoyable without fatigue, offering a friendly and enduring tactile experience.
-Artwork Concept-
As a hollow yo-yo, the interior is literally empty.
The team imagined it as a “secret capsule from space” that no one could open.
The name Capsuloid comes from Capsule + Asteroid, reflecting its art-inspired, asteroid-shaped capsule design.
Inside the capsule, abstract representations of human emotions and experiences across time were envisioned.
Within the DNA-helix surrounding the capsule, six molecular structures representing human emotion and sexuality were randomly integrated, blending scientific intrigue with cosmic imagination.
