Latence - Schematic Edition / Vermilion
Details
One throw, and old assumptions fall away.
The right design draws out
competitive performance that was there all along.
Latence is a bimetal competition yo-yo from mowl® built around a Size D bearing. Pairing a 7075 aluminum body with stainless steel rims, it brings together a small diameter, a wide profile, and a light weight, each at a high level.
If you’ve ever had doubts about Size D yo-yos, this is the one we’d most like you to try.
Light, yet powerful.
Compact, yet a strong spinner.

Replacement Pads and Bearings
Latence uses a Size D bearing rather than the Size C bearing that is standard in competition yo-yos. When replacing the response pads or bearing, be sure to choose Size D parts.

- mowl® Response Pad (Size D) Lime: Firmer than Black. Available from October 24
- Size D bearing: Coming soon
Why a Size D Bearing?
Size D bearings have a long history. In the 1990s, they were in common use in Europe. Yet they never became the standard in competition. Instead, the Size C bearing, first adopted in 2001, went on to become the norm.
The reason lies in the particular quirks of the Size D bearing. Design around it with the same approach used for Size C, and these problems tend to appear:
- Strong kickback (the string being pushed back out)
- A heavy feel in play
- The string doesn’t slide smoothly
Response technology was still immature at the time, and many Size D yo-yos spun well but were hard to handle. Over time, they faded from the competitive scene.
“The Size D bearing was never the problem.
The right design just didn’t exist yet.”
With this idea in mind, mowl®’s designer rethought Latence from the ground up. Kickback, a heavy feel, poor string slide: the key to resolving these quirks one by one was weight distribution.
Design Details
Instead of the more common M4 axle, Latence uses an M3.5 × 12 mm axle.
The rim joint draws on what we learned developing the Overgeneity, giving the yo-yo high strength despite its wide body.
A Feel Numbers Can’t Capture
Play without thinking about it, and you may forget it’s a Size D. Latence avoids the heaviness and quirks typical of Size D yo-yos, with a balance of diameter and width that feels standard and easy to handle.
It’s nimble, and its spin has a different character from Size C yo-yos. Pick one up and feel a presence you wouldn’t expect from a lightweight bimetal.
On the Competition Stage
At JJ26, a national contest for players 18 and under, mowl® Youth Ambassador Kai Inoue took 2nd place in the 1A Division using Latence.
A Latence in Dark Green / Polished Gold Rim (No Logo) also appears in the video announcing Kai Inoue’s addition to the mowl® team.
The Name “Latence”
Latence is a coined word that combines “Latent” and “Emergence.” It reflects the story of its development: using design to bring out, for the first time, the performance that had been latent in the Size D bearing.
Colors
The second run comes in three colors: two revivals of colorways that represent mowl®’s history, and one new color that marks a fresh direction.
Vermilion / Polished Blue Rim
A new colorway that pairs Vermilion, a vivid orange with a reddish tint, with glossy Polished Blue Rims.
The warm orange and the light-catching blue rims create a striking contrast.
It recalls the Orange / Polished Blue Rim from the first run of the M+, giving it a touch of mowl®’s history and playfulness.
Dark Green / Polished Gold Rim
Dark Green is the color most closely associated with mowl®.
It was a popular choice on the bimetal version of the original Surveillance, and it’s an essential part of the mowl® story.
Dark Green with Gold Rims was a favorite in the brand’s early days, and the combination now returns after about eight years.
The deep green and the bright gold rims balance calm with presence, for a finish that is distinctly mowl®.
Familiar to those who remember the original, and fresh to those who have discovered mowl® more recently, this colorway reflects where the brand began. It’s one we especially hope you’ll pick up.
Light Gray / Champagne Gold Rim
Born from a new direction for mowl®, this colorway is a departure from what we’ve done before.
A Light Gray body with a fine blasted finish is paired with softly glowing Champagne Gold Rims.
Its refined tones and elegant texture are reminiscent of high-end cosmetics packaging. Understated rather than showy, it combines quiet beauty with a premium feel.
A slightly different approach for mowl®, expressing a new kind of appeal.
