<Development Background>
When we began developing a new model, the idea of a hollow-body design had been on the table since around 2020. However, without a truly groundbreaking concept, launching mowl®︎’s first hollow-body yo-yo had proven to be a challenge.
Then in 2023, during one of our meetings, KALON DESIGN STUDIO—who would go on to handle the artwork for Capsuloid—made a bold suggestion:
“We’d love to try designing a yo-yo starting with the artwork first.”
Typically, yo-yo graphics are designed only after the shape and functionality have been finalized, which often limits creative expression due to the constraints of the yo-yo’s unique form.
But KALON’s proposal was a radical reversal of the usual process—
"Design a yo-yo that functions around our artwork,"
"We want to express ourselves freely on the yo-yo’s surface."
It was a request only a graphic designer would dare to make—ambitious, unconventional, and inspiring.
As ideas like sculptural gimmick yo-yos and other artistic forms were discussed in meetings with our design team, we also happened to be considering a new direction as a manufacturer. The timing aligned perfectly, and we decided to move forward with developing our first-ever hollow-body yo-yo—one with a smooth, flat face that acts as a circular canvas.
<Designer’s Interview>
Here, mowl®︎’s lead designer and graphic designer share their insights behind the creation of Capsuloid.

This time, the project was driven by the artwork first, with the theme:
“A yo-yo you can always carry with you—like mowl dangling by your side.”
In line with mowl’s philosophy of “constantly seeking new concepts,” we decided that if we were going to do something new, we might as well take it further and create a hollow-bodied yo-yo in a size rarely seen in the market.
To ensure the artwork would really shine, we designed a large face—like a canvas—which led to a bigger overall size compared to conventional hollow models.
Hollow-bodied yo-yos tend to carry extra weight due to the caps, so it’s typically hard to keep them light when scaling up. However, we carefully balanced this by distributing weight toward the outer rim, allowing the yo-yo to maintain the feel of a standard metal yo-yo while still featuring the iconic caps. The result is a solid, satisfying feel in hand.
Since hollow-bodied yo-yos have traditionally filled a niche demand and are generally more casual in nature, and because we set the theme around “carrying mowl wherever you go,” we intentionally avoided a hardcore competition spec. Instead, we focused on creating a casual yo-yo that still responds well.
In terms of feel, it offers a light and smooth throw—despite its larger diameter—creating an unexpectedly effortless experience.
The round, gentle shape of the body provides a soft, comfortable feeling throughout play. It's designed to be fatigue-free even after long sessions, offering a friendly, timeless performance.
-About Artwork-
As the name suggests, a hollow-bodied yo-yo has an empty interior.
We thought—it would be fascinating if it were actually a secret capsule from outer space that no one could open.
That idea inspired the name “Capsuloid”—a coined term combining Capsule and Asteroid.
From there, we began developing artwork that depicted a capsule shaped like a drifting asteroid.
Inside the capsule, we imagined a swirl of timeless human emotions and abstract elements—each open to interpretation by its holder.
Encircling the capsule is a DNA-like double helix, within which we've embedded six different molecular structures associated with human emotion and identity. These are arranged randomly, symbolizing the vast complexity and mystery held within.
<Color Variations>
Capsuloid : Shadow Dose (Blasted Black)
Shadow Dose drips from the abyss where light cannot reach.
This model marks our first implementation of cream-colored engraving on a black body—
a technique we've been developing in-house through ongoing research.
It embodies the essence of hollow-body design, serving as the core expression of the Capsuloid line.
The deep matte black sinks endlessly into the void,
radiating a presence that seems to absorb both time and emotion.
By stripping away all flashiness, this colorway allows you to engage with its essence each time you touch it—
a quiet energy filled with introspection and depth.
Capsuloid : Crimson Dose (Red / Matte Silver)
A passionate color that stains emotion in vivid red.
This fade evokes adrenaline—the symbol of passion and impulse embedded in the chemical structures etched into the design—
blended with a cool, rational matte silver.
Like a quiet flame slowly releasing its inner heat,
this fade expresses a beautiful and delicate tension.
Enjoy this intricate dose of intertwined emotions.
Capsuloid : Cool Dose (Blue / Matte Silver)
A Prescription of Clarity — Serotonin-Inspired Calm
A tranquil, mind-soothing color imbued with stillness and clarity.
The smooth fade from blue to matte silver evokes serotonin,
symbolizing gentle and serene perception.
With a crystalline finish that feels like falling into crisp, clear air,
this color delivers a “cool prescription” straight to your heart.
"Capsuloid" -Abyssal Dose
Deep, Silent, Beautiful.
The Acid Wash colorway embodies the theme of emotional depth.
Abyssal Dose—a shimmering blend of blue and purple that evokes the unreachable depths of the ocean—represents the coexistence of stillness and mystery. It is the fourth “prescription” colorway, encapsulating the quiet descent of emotions into a spiral beneath the surface.
